Overview
Dentures are removable appliances that replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues. There are basically two types of dentures- complete dentures and partial dentures. Partial dentures are used when the individual still has some natural teeth while complete dentures are use when all the natural teeth are lost. Dentures are not just for older patients; anyone regardless of their age may lose some or all of their teeth and may require a denture of some type. Dentures are designed to closely mimic the look of natural teeth so your appearance is not affected.
When dentures are required
Dentures may be required if you have lost some or all of your natural teeth, as a result of tooth decay, gum disease, or injury. Replacing missing teeth with dentures will help improve your appearance and overall health. This is because once you lose your teeth; the facial muscles can sag, making you look older than you actually are. Dentures will help improve your appearance and face profile, making it easier eat and speak.
An overview of the procedure
The whole procedure takes about one month to complete. At first, the dentist makes an initial diagnosis. This involves using an impression and a wax bite to determine the proper jaw position and vertical dimensions. A “try-in” is placed to ascertain the proper shape, color and fit. After this the final denture is placed, and minor adjustments are made. The roof of your mouth (palate) is covered by the base of the upper denture while the lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to accommodate your tongue.
