Periodontal diseases (Gum diseases) include simple gum inflammation as well as serious diseases that results in severe damages to the soft tissue and bone that gives the teeth its support. Our mouth is full of different bacteria. These bacteria in combination with mucus and some other particles form a colorless, sticky “plaque” on the teeth. These bacteria can also cause inflammation of the gums – a condition referred to as gingivitis. Although gingivitis does not result in loss of tissue and bone, if left untreated it can advance to periodontitis. In this case the gums separates from the teeth becomes infected and forms spaces referred to as “pockets” If it is not treated, the tissue, bones and gums that supports the teeth are destroyed. With support gone, the teeth become loose and will need to be removed.
When Treatments is required
If you experience any of the following symptoms, it’s a sign that you need to get treated by a dentist:
- Bad breath that won’t go away
- Tender or bleeding gums
- Red or swollen gums
- Loose teeth
- Painful chewing
- Visible pus surrounding the teeth and gums
- Sensitive teeth
An Overview of the Procedure
The main objective of the different types of treatment is to control the infection. The procedure involves the removal of the “plague” through a deep-cleaning method referred to as scaling and root planing. Scaling involves scraping off the tartar both above and below the gum line while root planing helps get rid of bacteria that contribute to the disease and the removal of rough spots on the tooth root where the bacteria gather. In some cases a laser may be used to remove tartar and plaque, which will result in less swelling, pain and bleeding.
At Blacktown Family Dental we have both the professional staff and equipment that will make the procedure painless and free from discomfort.
